1. Pre-menstrual Syndrome (PMS) causes
There are a number of imbalances that can be occurring during the menstrual cycle that can be causing these symptoms.
Breast tenderness is also linked to excess estrogen and is also common with iodine deficiency. Iodine promotes healthy metabolism and the detoxification of estrogen.
Acne can be caused by an excess of androgens (male sex hormones) and zinc deficiency. Androgens are a normal part of women’s reproduction and an excess is common with women who have PCOS, hypothalamic amenorrhea or post-pill acne.
If ovulation is not occurring, the lack of progesterone can cause anger, irritability, anxiety and lethargy. Progesterone has a calming effect and is also anti-inflammatory.
Psychological symptoms can also be further exacerbated when trying to do too much during the luteal phase. Stress and over-training during this phase can lead to feelings of burning out, hopelessness, overwhelm and tearfulness.
